If you asked me what my favorite season was, I would probably tell you that I prefer the crisp temperatures of fall or the rainy days in spring, to the hot and muggy summer temperatures.
However, more than what the thermometer reads, I can never get enough of the atmosphere during the summer months. Families are taking vacations. Kids are playing in sprinklers. People are more relaxed. The sun is nudging us to stay awake longer.
And my ultimate favorite part of summer: the abundance of fresh fruit available!
When my husband and I recently found ourselves at Russo’s, one of my absolute favorite grocery stores/delis in the Boston area, I couldn’t help but pick-up a variety of colorful fresh fruit, all grabbing my attention from the moment we arrived (if you live nearby and have yet to visit Russo’s, please promise me you will!).
When we arrived home to find one giant honeydew sitting on our counter, a pint of fresh blueberries and 2 bags full of peaches (my husband and I both filled a bag, without the other person knowing, as we both had the same instinct that we just could not leave that store without these perfectly juicy peaches!), I knew I wanted to make sure we ate them while they were at their peak of freshness.
While I debated baking a blueberry and/or peach pie, or using the fruit as a topping for pancakes, I decided that all I really wanted was to let these bright summer flavors shine on their own. So into a bowl they went, topped with a few dollops of vanilla Greek yogurt, and enjoyed by the bowlful.
So there’s no real recipe for this, except the following: place your favorite summer flavors in a bowl, mix and savor the season!
Oh, and just because I couldn’t stop there with the fresh fruit, here’s another one of my favorites that I also had to “impulse-buy” – a bag of cherries.
In my opinion, I can’t think of a better afternoon snack to enjoy on a hot day then a big bowl of cherries!
