Rudi’s Bakery Let’s Doodle Lunch GIVEAWAY!

by simplylife on July 31, 2012

I’ve done several reviews of Rudi’s Bakery in the past.  I’m a big fan of their products and love how they’re trying to revolutionize school lunches through “Let’s Doodle Lunch!”

As part of the Let’s Doodle Lunch partnership, Chef Ann Cooper, “The Renegade Lunch Lady,” created a list of 10 tips for healthier school lunches.  These tips include:

  • Use a Bento style lunch box with numerous compartments for lots of delicious flavors.
  • Go shopping with your kids in the produce section of the grocery store and let them help pick out
  • Let your kids help make their lunch; let them add condiments to a sandwich or allow them to mix dried fruit and nuts for trail mix.
  • Pack dips with fruits and vegetables for fun flavorful eating.
  • Aim for the rainbow: make sure there are a variety of colors in your child’s lunch.
  • Eat lunch with your child at school so you really know what’s being served.
  • Become familiar with the school district’s wellness policy and gather like-minded parents to let the school board know you want healthier food.
  • Volunteer in your school’s cafeteria, then try and work with and support the nutrition services director to create healthier food options.
  • Help raise funds to get a salad bar in the cafeteria.
  • Work with the school to institute 30 minute lunch periods with recess before lunch

Personally, I don’t have children and am always so impressed at the many ways parents get creative to make sure their children are eating healthy meals!

In addition to these helpful tips, I am now thrilled to be able to offer you a Rudi’s Let’s Doodle Lunch giveaway!  The giveaway includes: an art pack with an art kit, a sketch pad, a beret, a reusable bag and 2 product coupons!  This is perfect if you’re looking for new art projects for the remainder of summer or already thinking about going back to school art supplies!

To enter, simply leave a comment telling me what you do for yourself and/or your family to ensure you/they are eating healthy lunches!

Giveaway will be open until August 5.

P.S. You definitely don’t have to have kids to enter!  I would completely enter to win this for myself if I could!

What a cool giveaway!! I would love to win this and give it to my friend Alazar–he’s 11 and loves art. He also has a lot of medical issues so he has a very, very structured diet in order to keep everything in check. He eats a great diet of meat, veggies, fruit, etc. Being diabetic, he also has to manage his sugar intake. Healthy is best!

Thank you so much for sharing this- Alazar sounds like a wonderful friend to have! :)

i don’t buy the junk food. If it’s not in the house it can’t be packed for their lunches.

What a great habit to have!

I know what I am making for their lunch. We do not pack too much of one thing try to give fruit and such and veggies and the fresh meats or yogurt in the lunch.

Fun giveaway! I always make sure that our fridge is fully stocked with plenty of fruits and veggies, and the snacks we have in the house are always on the healthy side too. We pretty much just don’t have unhealthy items in the house – that way, our only options are good ones! :)

I pack my lunch everyday! It’s healthier and saves me money!

What a cool kit! I’ll have to enter for my “future” niece (if I happen to get engaged!). My favorite way to have healthy lunches for myself is to prep everything I can on Wednesday night – I put together salads, chop veggies, etc. so it’s all ready to go during the week!

I am also amazed at the thought that goes into children’s lunch boxes, but I think it is such an important thing. Plus, I kind of like the tips and lunchbox containers for myself too :) Preparing in advance is a huge help for me!

  • ykristen

Wow would really like to win your great giveaway! I always try to make all their meals so that i can control what goes into their diet. More fruits, veggies, full grains and less meat in their meals. Limiting the use of salt and oil and intakes of snacks to healthier homemade ones is also important.

This is so cool! Too bad my kid is already in his teens, else this will make him real happy :) Good luck to all participants!

For me packing healthy lunches for my family involves planning ahead and a little bit of preparation the night before. It is so worth it though!

This is great! Love these tips. I encourage many of them with the kids I work with.
I always pack a lunch for work. It definitely helps me to stay on track. I find that leftover work wonders cause they are exciting and hold me over well. :)

I like to really plan ahead–that’s the best advice I have.

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

I think that is EXCELLENT advice!

I love the bento box idea – I think they’re so cute! My main tip is just proper planning – making sure I buy things suitable for packing and things like that.

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca)

Not sure if this is open to Canadians … but if it is … I always make sure I have fruits and vegetables in my lunch and I always, always drink water at lunch.

I love the bento idea because it can be very healthy but kids think its fun!

  • Tasha

Packing a healthy lunch for my son is pretty easy, because I am just packing the foods he is used to eating and already loves. Fresh seasonal fruits, veggies, cottage cheese, natural applesauce and yogurt make great alternatives to the bags of chips and cookies other kids are eating.

  • itzyskitchen

SO fun! This is my favorite tip: “Eat lunch with your child at school so you really know what’s being served.” I had never thought about that. I make as much ahead of time as I can for all of our meals. This makes it easy to grab HEALTHY options vs. junk.

  • Mom to Simply Life

Firstly, I think these tips are great. Having worked in a lunch room myself, I know the waste and definite lack of nutrition! The only way that I know what your sister is basically eating is to pack her lunch myself which always consisted of freshly sliced , bite size fruit, along with a bag of vegetables, a fresh large crispy apple and then a small snack. The other insights come from loggin on to see what she is purchasing…technology!

  • http://amourbeurre.com/ Michelle

My mom used to take us grocery shopping with her, we then would put together our own luches with her. It made it fun to try to figure out how to get all our food groups in there, while using all the cool stuff we found at the store!

Can you imagine how horrified a kid would be if his mom or dad came to the school cafeteria with him? Instant social leprosy. The rest of the tips are good and all, but that one sounds like the idea of someone who never WAS a kid.
