Behind the Scenes: Winter Lighting for Food Photography

by simplylife on December 13, 2011

After months of researching, debating, waiting and comparing I finally bit the bullet and bought a light.

I know, with an introduction like that it sounds like I’m shopping for house and not a light.

However, if you take pictures of food and prefer not to eat all your meals at 2pm on a Saturday then you understand what a dilemma this is.

Winter lighting.  It’s been getting to me worse than waking-up with zits the day before prom.

Every photographer agrees that the best way to shoot food photos is in natural light.  But when you are in an office nearly every moment the sun is actually out, it makes it pretty impossible to show how delicious that meal was on Tuesday evening when the only lighting you have is from the oven timer.

So for the past month, I’ve been trying different things.  I’ve taken off lampshades, held my steaming plate of food under every light in our home and have been re-introduced to the whiteness balance on my camera.  Still my photos looked yellow and dim.

So I bit the bullet and bought this Lowel EGO light.  After comparing several options that either were cheaper but had poor reviews or would make our dining area look like a photo studio (because let’s be honest, I would set it up and promise to take it down “soon” but never really do so until summer lighting returned), this seemed to be the best fit.  If you’re interested in more info, it was actually this post that really convinced me to pay more for a light than I would for a pair of shoes.

So far, I couldn’t recommend this more and have been so pleased with the results!  Of course, I’m no professional photographer.  In fact, I still don’t have a DSLR camera (I know, the horror; how can I really call myself a food blogger?)  But the one thing I have learned in these 2+ years of taking pictures of food on a nearly daily basis is that lighting matters.  A lot.

This light comes with a sturdy white cardboard.  The closer you move the cardboard to the light, the more reflection (less shadows) on the object.

As you can see, these pictures were taken in the evening.  You can see more of the results here, but these photos are from the first time I used the light and so far, I’ve been very happy with the results!

Oh and just to keep the record clear- I bought this product with my own money and am doing the review for no one but you.  I know how many blogs and websites I’ve looked at to try and figure this out so I wanted to let you know my first-hand experience, as I imagine you may be doing the same.

Wow, the light makes the cookies look great. I really should invest in a light like that…

  • http://amazingasset.com Tessa @ Amazing Asset

I am not really into photography, but I really enjoy reading about this! I do want to learn more about it though, so I appreciate these posts
What a difference a light box makes!

  • http://www.pigpigscorner.com/ pigpigscorner

I’ve been eyeing this for a long time now, but I have to admit it’s a bit pricey.

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

Agreed! It’s a bit pricey for me as well but after months of thinking about it and deciding it was something I would use nearly everyday, we decided it was worth it!

  • http://www.bakebikeblog.com Lisa @ bakebikeblog

wow _ I had no idea that photo was taken at night! What a difference!

  • http://whatisbakinginthebarbershop.blogspot.com/ Colleen

Wow, good for you! Such an exciting purchase :) I never would have known that your cookies were photographed at night! That’s awesome.

I am impressed!!! Winter light is the bane of my existence right now. I am looking for a light. This one is on the lis!

  • Cookie Sleuth

Very neat tool! When I get in a bind, I just have my husband take the picture! He has a knack for that.

  • http://www.vegvacious.blogspot.com Andrea@Vegvacious

It’s crazy how good the pics are with that light! I’ve been thinking about trying to learn some pic techniques for my blog in the New Year – I have just a basic digital camera and I’m hoping to invest in something a little more sophisticated very soon1

  • Jolene (Everydayfoodie)

I need a light – prairie winters are dark!

  • http://www.yummychunklet.wordpress.com Yummychunklet

Thank you so much for doing this! I’ve noticed that the number of weekly posts I do has gone down because of the earlier sunset time. Can’t wait to set this up!

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

Agreed! I’ve had so many meals that I’ve photographed and haven’t posted because the pictures come out way too dark!

  • http://kthadani.com Khushboo

Wow this light is great..I totally thought those cookies were photographed in natural light…or that you had mad editing skills :) !

  • Gina (Candid RD)

Wow, I nee done of those! I’m so glad you wrote this post, because I’ve been meaning to look into a light like that. $107 isn’t so bad, but I still need to save for it. Thanks for the link and the cookies look fabulous! I want to make my cookies look like that too :)

  • http://juniakk.blogspot.com Juniakk

i’ve been having the same problem…. i’m so going to buy one of these light bulbs!!!

  • http://www.love-life-project.com Stephanie

Your light works really well! Your photos look great. I built a lightbox out of a cardboard box and tissue paper, but I definitely need some better lightbulbs for my lamps. They’re not bright or natural enough.

  • Hilliary Wolfe

Wow, this is so neat! It makes the cookies look great!

  • Mom

I’m so glad for you that something that makes you happy, you use almost daily, and is so helpful to your readers could accomplish this! I’m just not happy I’m starting my morning with these cookies again!! The good thing is, I also got to start my morning smiling and giggling at your writing…THANKS!

  • http://ediblepsychology.com/ Emily (Edible Psychology)

Wow! I am even more impressed with your cookie photos knowing they were taken at night. And good for you for taking your photos without a DSLR. You are clearly very talented because I think your pictures look amazing and I think it is a lot harder without a DSLR. I am definitely going to have to think about one of these lights – I also get so frustrated with the lighting this time of year.

    Great tips, thanks! :D

  • http://peacecooking.blogspot.com/ Sutapa

Thanks for such helpful info! Truly for food blogger like us it is difficult to work at night in low light, how much you want to adjust the light it never give the right pics quality and I think this is worth the money!

  • http://missmagnoliamunches.blogspot.com Rebecca

I’m shocked to learn that you don’t use a DSLR! You’re pictures are always so good.

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

      THANK YOU!!! :)

  • http://keepitsweetblog.com Lauren at Keep It Sweet

I’ve been considering buying a light for a while but am just not ready to spend the money and the space to store it. Your photos look fantastic, though! It definitely seems worth it.

  • Juliana

Like you I’ve been searching for “light”, and you sure found one that really works…thanks for the tips.
Hope you are having a wonderful week and again thanks for sharing this tip.

  • http://merigoesround.com meri

I bet it will be worth it! My boyfriend tries to help me invent ways to take better night time photos, but nothing has worked very well :)

  • Rambleswithreese

It looks fantastic! What a great idea you had and you’re non DSLR worked great! I’ve got to check out this light.

  • Alexis L Irvin

i agree! i feel like there’s no time for me to take pictures anymore! when i get up and come home from work, it’s pitch black :(

  • http://www.acambridgestory.com Emily

Tell me about it! Winter photography is so tough – though, even summer lighting in a not-ideally-lit kitchen can also be tricky. Thanks for showing us your workaround!

  • http://errign.wordpress.com Errign

I don’t have any photography tips other than not using my flash and eating super early so my pictures don’t look awful :)

  • http://sopranointherealworld.blogspot.com Kristina

That light is perfect! I leave for work in the dark and come home in the dark…and at work I eat out of tupperware or a mason jar which let’s face it is just not that photogenic. I’m not sure I’m quite ready to make the investment yet…but I’m glad everyone else has these issues too!

  • http://www.foodfamilyfitness.com Jen@FoodFamilyFitness

WOW!!!! I love it! I really need to do something, I hate the “yellow” of dinner pictures.

  • http://allieksmith.wordpress.com/ Allie

Wow, that is really interesting! I’m glad you got a light so I can see all of your awesome pictures even more! I wish I knew anything about photography.. but I don’t LOL!

  • Kristen @ swanky dietitian

This is great!!! I’m thinking I may get one.
I have resorted to taking pics of my food during the weekend since I only have darkness when I get off work.
Your pictures always look amazing by the way!!

  • Amy (Savory Moments)

Good tips – I’m glad you found this. I recently got a better camera, but it’s so difficult to get good lighting this time of year, except on the weekends!

  • http://foodfitnessfrolicking.com Anna @ Food Fitness Frolicking

Thank you so much for sharing this! I’ve had the same problem lately..unless I want to photograph dinner at 2pm, the photos come out yellow and dark. I love this light you bought!! And your photos turned out fantastic!

You said you don’t have a dslr? Your photography skills are amazing! Oh my gosh..I never would’ve known!

My favorite photography tip is to use manual mode! I used to be so afraid of it and now I’ll never turn back! ha

  • eatingRD

Thank you for posting on this! I’ve had that ego light in my amazon wish list for ages and would really like to try it now. Our house is on the dark side and I usually don’t get the chance to take pictures until it is pitch black outside :) I always try to use naturaly light, but that can be very difficult most of the time!

  • http://kirantarun.com/food Kiran @ KiranTarun.com

Thanks for the review. I need to get this as well — daylight is shorter these days :(

  • http://www.teczcape.blogspot.com Tigerfish

I’m also not using DSLR! hahah…and also many times wanted to get those Lowel lights (but still have not). I only wait for the sun….so for me, winter time is “lull” for taking food photos…and in turn, I do not have much inspiration to cook up anything new too. :O

  • Back Road Journal

Your light really makes the cookies look great. I photograpy everything I post right we eat it at night. By the time you think you might have a good shot the food is cold. When you get it in your computer the light was terrible and the photo doesn’t look its best. Good for you for finding something that works.

  • http://joyjoycreativeoutlet.blogspot.com/ Joy

I have been tempted to get a lamp like that. The cookies look great.

  • http://twitter.com/nutritiouseats Melanie Flinn

I have looked at this lighting system for years and the reviews (on amazon at least) were never stellar. I have gone back and forth on whether to buy them and almost did for xmas this year. Glad to hear you like. Now that we are moving to Seattle, I think I am going to have to!!

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

Oooh- I used to live in Seattle. I loved it! And yes, I do REALLY like this light! Not as good as natural light but I’m really happy with it!
