Paris: The Food

by simplylife on November 27, 2011

If I could sum-up our trip to Paris in 3 things, it would be:

1) Baguettes…

2 ) Chocolate…

3) Baguettes and Chocolate…

Okay, fine- I’d also add in Cafe Au Lait, French Onion Soup and maybe a little sightseeing :)

Seriously though, the food in Paris was amazing!  At first I was bummed when I found out our hotel didn’t include breakfast, but then I realized what an opportunity it was to start the day getting in a long walk while perusing every adorable cafe along the street and what pasties they had inside!

My husband ate a baguette sandwich nearly every chance he had.  They’re available everywhere, are cheap and always fresh!  I never grew tired of seeing people everywhere carrying fresh baguettes, especially the many times it was peeking out of their briefcase or shopping bag; the day can’t be complete without one of these!

Below is one of my favorite meals- it was our last afternoon in Paris and clearly we went out with a bang ;)  My husband and I each got a bowl of their rich French Onion Soup that came with this basket of fresh French Bread and then because we had been craving it all week, shared a side of French Fries.  It was heaven at a Parisian cafe.

Another one of our favorite meals was at a quaint and cozy little restaurant filled with locals as well as tourists, who were all looking for something warm, comforting and perfect to share: fondue.  We had the “3 cheese fondue” that was smooth, rich and the perfect ending to a day of walking nearly 10 miles throughout the city.  The funny part is that I ordered the “vegetarian” dish to accompany this so I could fill-up on something other than only cheese and bread and I was given salmon with a side of veggies :)

Whenever we travel, we try to bring some of our own snacks so that we don’t have to buy every meal out.  During this trip, we brought along these trail mixes and granola bars from Trader Joe’s.  I love these trail mixes- they’re filled with almonds, cashews and dried cranberries.  They’re small, easy to carry and incredibly filling.  This way, most days we were able to get a later breakfast, enjoy these in the afternoon and then fill-up at dinner!…

In the next post, I’ll be sure to tell you more of what I saw other than food (I promise, we didn’t just look at bread and pastries the whole trip).  But for now, I’ll leave you with one of the most memorable foodie sights that we repeatedly saw throughout the trip: Nutella the size of my overpacked suitcase.

I really want to visit Paris just to eat. I think the best places for food (so far) have been Barcelona, Seoul S.Korea, and Los Angeles. I travel to eat..yum!

I’m with you- the food is always my favorite part of the trip!

France by far had the best food of my travels :) I had a lot of baguettes & chocolate as well, but I was also impressed by my entree dishes, lapin &foie gras were also delicious.

without a doubt, tuscany, italy. i wasn’t even into food back then and i remember freaking out over it. even the gas station meals were better than things you’d find in the states.

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

Oh that is too funny- gosh, I think I need to add Tuscany to my places to visit!

  • http://www.confessionsofachocoholic.com/ Bianca Garcia

Definitely Italy, specifically Tuscany. Paris is on my bucket list and I’m loving this post because it’s making me want to get there sooner rather than later!

So much deliciousness in this post. Hmmm, best food I’ve had….Best meal ever was in Ireland, best food overall – probably Singapore.

wow. this is a really mouth waterig post! Traveling in Italy and living in Brazil were both bad for my waist line but lovely on my palate.

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

Ha I love it! We went to Brazil not too long ago and I LOVED every meal there!!!

  • http://sopranointherealworld.blogspot.com Kristina

    SO JEALOUS!
As far as where I’ve had the best food…that’s a toss-up. I think I’d have to go with India or Italy, but I loved them for such different reasons! Overall those were the best, but there are specific moments from other trips that stand out to me as “the best,” too… street food in Bangkok, pretzels in Munich, sushi pretty much straight out of the water in Tokyo… I should probably stop or you’ll find me at the airport in 30 minutes trying to board the next plane out of the country :)

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

We went to India and I LOVED the food (when it wasn’t too spicy :) – Our hotel had a buffet for breakfast and I started each day like it was Thanksgiving :)

    Those baguettes…look SO good!

Are you kidding me with those chocolate tubes? I’m going there. Right now.

I don’t know where the best eating was, that I’ve been. We ate like kings in Belgium, but I love Indonesian food and living there was delicious (even though I was a little kid and didn’t know that much about food at the time). I guess it’s a toss-up between the two.

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

Oooh I bet you had great food in both places- how fun!

There is nothing that reminds me more of Europe than baguettes, chocolate croissants, nutella with digestives, and cafe con leche. This post brings me back!

  • Rambleswithreese

  • Allie

I’ve always wanted to visit Paris.. mostly for the food! YUM :D

  • http://forgottenbeast.wordpress.com/ Allie

Wow, everything looks so good! I love how classy french food is. I think Italy has had my favorite out-of-country food, but I haven’t been to many places beyond that (Africa, but rice in sauce–no matter how good the sauce is–does get old). Mmm, I want to go to Paris just for the bread!

    • http://www.simplylifeblog.com/ Simply Life

You should! It’s definitely worth it! :)

  • Hilliary Wolfe

I would love to go to paris just to eat the yummy food! Give me bread and chocolate any day and I am one happy girl!

  • Mom

Ooh, I am sure I would fit right in here with all of the delicious food! I loved the change in your outlook about breakfast, but t e n miles! So glad you got to experience all of this and so happy you’re sharing it!

Holy yum!!! Now I can’t wait to go to Paris. Don’t know when, but keeping fingers crossed :)

I love India and it’s street foods — so darn cheap and finger licking good!!

Mmmmm the bread! I bet it was so amazingly fresh! I enjoy traveling to islands for the fresh, tropical fruit

Thanks for sharing your trip photos. And I thought I was the only one who bring TJ’s trail mix (individually packed) around when I travel….;p

When I lived in France I wanted so badly to support my pain au chocolat addiction, but I couldn’t stomach the cost of buying them twice daily from a bakery (I probably could have, in retrospect). So I would buy these packages of eight or ten from the grocery store junk food aisle – which was enormous, by the way. They obviously weren’t very high quality, but they were still delicious. That’s one of my best food memories actually, having tea time every day with a pain au chocolat in my apartment in France.

    I miss seeing Paul bakeries!
