The Effects of Running

by simplylife on October 7, 2011

Next month the hubby and I will be running a half-marathon. I’ve never run a race this late in the year and am definitely noticing the difference of training for a run when it’s chilly outside and I’m out before the sun is.

For one, I’ve noticed that it’s even harder to get up in the morning.  Even though it’s the same time I’ve been getting up for a year, when the sun isn’t up it just feels wrong to be getting out of bed.

The second difference is the actual part of running before the sun has risen.  I’ve been considering getting reflective running gear so that I don’t get worried every time a car passes me that the driver doesn’t notice me running (even though I’m on the sidewalk and they’re hopefully on the road).  I used to think these were silly and unnecessary.  Now I completely see the point; oh how the tables have turned.  Do you use anything like this?

Once I get myself out of bed and into a rhythm I am always so glad to be outside with my feet hitting the pavement, my thoughts free to run faster than my feet and a moment of quiet before the day begins.

During the weekend is when we do our long runs and sprints together.  These are also the days we notice ourselves looking for a few extra snacks around the house.  These gluten-free crackers from Crunchmaster could not have come at a more perfect time!  The Hint of Sea Salt was perfect to dip in a big bowl of soup while the White Cheddar were delicious  on their own.  Both flavors were perfectly seasoned, light and crunchy!

I haven't gotten a reflective vest yet since I try to run in the afternoons when it's still light out…it's a great idea though, even if it feels silly looking! For me, I think the winter running hat I wear might look a little silly :) Nice work with your early morning runs!

I don't think I do anything too embarrassing–but I'm sure if I worked out more I would, lol. And the reflective vest is a good idea!! Get one!

I just get all red in the face really fast – so I don't even need to buy anything in order to look ridiculous when I exercise.

My dad runs a lot and I don't think he has any reflective vests, but he does try to get out there in the last scrap of daylight. He rides his bike to and from work so sometimes it's dark then, so he does have those velcro reflective strips to strap around his ankles. They make his pants look like hammer pants, of course, so that's pretty silly-looking.

Running is the best therapy! It totally relieves my stress. Sometimes i walk through my group fitness cardio when i run… Sometimes i end up calling moves outloud when i run by others and they think im whacky ;)

Ps good luck on the half!!!!

That's awesome that you get yourself up for those early morning runs. I am new to running so this will be my first year dealing with the dark and cold…

I agree it is harder and harder to get up in the mornings! Congrats on getting up early for long runs! and good luck on the half!

My hb and myself use reflective gear when we bike! And we have reflective tapes on our helmets too. Silly but being safe is more important.

I have a neon green shirt that I wear when I run early in the morning! I feel ridiculous but I'd rather be noticed than hit by a car!

I totally hear you on the darkness. I don't think I do anything too wacky when I run (observers would say otherwise!) but I've had my share of 10+ milers in the snow. ugh.

I feel weird getting up when it's dark too! haha It feels so un natural! But after a good run, I feel great!

I'm running my 3rd marathon on Sunday.. so excited!

Also, I recently bought a bright yellow reflective rain jacket for running/ cycling. No shame.

Though I'm not running, I am incorporating at least an hour of walking every day. I do feel better when I wake up in the morning!

  • redmenace

Good luck in the race! I used to run very early in the morning and I always wore a reflective vest just like that one. A great investment! xoxo

My sleep cycle gets very affected by the amount/ time of light that it is. I hope you get in the swing of things :)

I have the hardest time getting out of bed if the sun isn't up! I am impressed that you are able to do that more than once a week. Even in the middle of the day I worry that cars don't see me haha

This morning was a pretty epic running attire FAIL on my part. I wore 2 diff shoes, candy cane striped mitteny things, pink Nike shorts and an old l/s shirt with a skateboard image on the front. It looked just as cool as it sounds. But, i got 6 miles in, int he dark. So at least that part was a success. I can’t wait for the time change, ONLY because that means a little light in the am when I’m dragging myself out the door w/ 2 different shoes on.
