Simply Life “Refresher”

by simplylife on October 10, 2011

No, you’re not seeing things; Simply Life has a few changes!  After way too much time debating about a “new look,” the pros and cons of self-hosting and if I could actually teach myself HTML “language” (the answer is no; I tried, failed, tried and ended up nearly in tears), I enlisted a good (patient) friend, a talented blog designer and a bit of my own time to give Simply Life a “refresher.”

At first, I was ready to go for “the head-to-toe” makeover. I started keeping a list of blogs I liked the look of and the styles I would want. However, when I started to think about what I wanted the “new look” of Simply Life to be, I basically wanted what I’ve had all along: something (I think) is clean, natural and welcoming….just a bit “cleaned-up.”

Isn’t it funny how sometimes it just takes a moment of reflection to realize we already have what we want?

Thankfully, our patient, kind and generous friend, Seth, who already has tons of experience in web design offered to make the switch from Blogger to WordPress, and then self-hosted on DreamHost.  He also added Thesis Theme (which I’m finding very user-friendly) and Disqus, along with a few other changes.

After that foundation was set, I then worked with the talented (and also very patient; yes, this is a requirement if it involves things words like pixels and widgets) Julie from Savvy Eats.  Julie helped me to make changes to the design so that it all “fit” together and was so kind, flexible and responsive throughout the entire process.

Thank you to everyone who helped make these changes and thank YOU for continuing to read Simply Life!

If you’d like to know more about Seth, here is his blog and twitter account (he just finished a 30 day series on coffee).

Oh and the perfect meal to munch-on while you’re making these changes?  Roasted veggies (turnips, carrots, potatoes and onions) alongside a grilled prosciutto and gruyere panini.

~Now my question for you as I’m new to WordPress: is there a way to “follow” blogs? I continue to check back to Blogger for this and would love to know if I’m missing something.  Thanks!

Thanks for commenting on my blog so I could discover yours! This is my first time here so I don’t know what your last design looked like, but I am liking this one a lot!
As for following, I do not use self-hosted WordPress so I’m not sure if there is a way. I just use google reader to follow all my faves! It’s the easiest way IMO.

Thanks for the kind words and the tip! I think I’ll get things transferred over to google reader asap!

You were reading my mind. I really am so tired of my blog look and want to clean it up ALOT. I will take a look at Seth’s site but I have a feeling my meager budget is not enough. Your blog looks fantastic though! I am so impressed. Anyhow, you can subscribe to blogs via the RSS feed or just by subscribing by email.

Love your new design! So glad you are on WordPress, and most importantly, Thesis theme. I use it for all of my blogs and love it!

The only ways I know to follow blogs are via RSS or email subscription. All blogs should have these options for you to easily subscribe :) Good luck!
